CrowdKerb is a map of where you can park in Cambridge, kept up to date by the people who use it. This page says what we collect when you use the app, why, who sees it, and how to have it deleted. If anything here is unclear, email support@crowdkerb.com.
Who we are
CrowdKerb runs the app and this website, and is responsible for the personal data described here (the "controller" under UK data protection law). You can reach us at support@crowdkerb.com.
Using the map without an account
You can look at the map without signing in. We don't create an account or keep anything about you, beyond the technical records described under Technical information.
What we collect when you sign in
Your account
- An account ID and the email address from Google or Apple, depending on which you sign in with. If you sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we only get Apple's relay address.
- How you want to appear to others: a username you choose, or your name, and the avatar you pick.
- A contact email, if you give us a different one.
- When you last used the app, so we can spot abuse and keep things tidy.
What you add
- The stretches of kerb you draw, what kind of parking you say they are, their hours and notes, the stretches you confirm, and the free spaces you count.
- Photos of parking signs you add. Your phone resizes them before they're sent. A member of our team checks each one before anyone else sees it.
- Things you report to us, such as a photo that's wrong.
- Your points, level and what earned them, and any ad-free time you have and how you got it.
What you add is shared with everyone who uses CrowdKerb, under the name you chose. That's how the map works. You can change how you appear at any time under You → Settings, and it changes on everything you've already added.
Your location
If you allow it, the app uses your location on your phone to centre the map on you and show the stretches near you. It is only used while the app is open. We don't send your location to our servers or keep a record of where you've been. When you draw a stretch, we receive where that stretch of road is, which is usually near where you are.
Technical information
Like any website or app, the servers that run CrowdKerb receive your IP address and basic details of each request (the app's version, the time). Our hosting providers keep these records for a short time for security and to fix problems. The map's background tiles are loaded from OpenStreetMap and CARTO, who receive your IP address and which part of the map you're looking at.
Adverts
Some screens in the app (Activity and You, never the map) show a small banner advert from Google AdMob, unless you have ad-free time. We ask Google for non-personalised adverts, which aren't based on your browsing elsewhere. In the UK and EU, the app asks for your consent through Google's consent form before showing adverts. Google may still collect device identifiers and your IP address to show and measure adverts and to prevent fraud. See how Google uses information from apps that use its services.
Why we use it
- To run CrowdKerb for you: your account, showing what you add, your points and ad-free time. We rely on this being necessary to provide the service you asked for.
- To keep the map accurate and safe: checking photos, handling reports, stopping abuse and undoing vandalism. This is in our legitimate interest, and that of everyone who relies on the map.
- Adverts: with your consent where the law requires it.
We don't sell your personal data, and we don't use it for anything else.
Who else handles it
We use these providers to run CrowdKerb. They only handle your data for us:
- Google Firebase: signing in.
- Apple: signing in, if you choose Sign in with Apple.
- Vercel: hosting the app's server and this website.
- Neon: our database.
- Google AdMob: adverts, as above.
- OpenStreetMap and CARTO: map tiles, as above.
Some of these providers process data outside the UK, for example in the United States. Where they do, they use the safeguards UK data protection law requires, such as the UK's international data transfer agreements.
A small CrowdKerb team can see accounts and contributions to moderate the map, and every change the team makes is logged.
How long we keep it
We keep your account for as long as you have it. When you delete it (You → Settings → Delete account), we delete your account and your photos straight away. What you added to the map, such as the kind of parking a stretch is, stays, because other people rely on it. It no longer shows your name: it says "Deleted user". Copies in backups and logs are removed as those expire, normally within 30 days.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, or to stop using it in some ways. You can also ask us to send your data to you in a form another service can use. Email support@crowdkerb.com and we'll reply within a month. You can delete your account yourself at any time in the app.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. We'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.
Children
CrowdKerb isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you think a child has signed up, email us and we'll delete the account.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change matters, we'll tell you in the app.
